Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections

This procedure requires a fluoroscope, which is a special x-ray machine that allows a precise needle placement. A light intravenous sedation and a local anesthetic in the area over the nerve root opening are given to relieve your pain. A steroid medication is also injected around the nerve root to decrease the inflammation and swelling of the nerve root. This technique is favored because of the precision with which solutions can be delivered to a specific nerve root and the front location of the needle in the epidural space (outermost part of the spinal canal).

Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections

Sometimes injections may bring pain relief for several weeks to months and then further treatment is needed. Other times a single injection brings long-term relief.
